Wartau

Wartau is a municipality in the Rhine valley in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Landmarks and names founder of the village is the castle Wartau.

Geography

Wartau consists of the villages:

Then there are the hamlet Plattis, Murris and Matug.

The Wartau lies at the foot of the Gonzens and Alviermassives. Wartau has a diverse landscape with a well-preserved flora and fauna. Part of the municipal boundary is formed by the Rhine.

The municipal administration of Wartau has its headquarters in Azmoos. The municipality has a railway station in Trübsbach, here is also a connection to the A13 motorway and the border crossing to Balzers ( Principality of Liechtenstein).

History

The nobleman Heinrich von Wildenberg, screen Vogt of the monastery Ragaz, 1261 was the owner of the fortress or waiting in the floodplain. Through inheritance the rule came to the house to become mountain - Sargan, the Counts of Berg and Will 1414 Count Friedrich VII of Toggenburg and 1429 to Count Bernhard von Thierstein, who took the castle law of Zurich and the fortress Wartau the city surrendered. With the sale of the county Sargans to Zurich, Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz, Unterwalden, Glarus and train in 1483, the sovereignty over Wartau went to these stands. 1694/95, there was the so-called Wartau trade almost to a war between the Catholic and Reformed screen locations.
