Washington-on-the-Brazos, Texas

Washington-on -the- Brazos was a settlement on the banks of the Brazos River in Texas, which was part of Mexico at that time. Here, the Republic of Texas was proclaimed in 1836. The name " Washington-on -the- Brazos " was used here to distinguish the settlement from " Washington-on -the- Potomac ". The place was just a small town on a river ferry.

On March 1, 1836 delegates came all communities in Texas here together in a half-finished building. At temperatures only slightly above the zero point, they wrote a constitution and formed a transitional government. The Texan Declaration of Independence was proclaimed on March 2, and adopted the Constitution on March 16. The next day the delegates and with them the inhabitants of the settlement were forced to flee to escape the approaching Mexican army.

The inhabitants returned later, when after the battle of San Jacinto, the Mexican army was defeated. The guide of the place then tried to enforce Washington as its capital, but the government of Texas decided to Waterloo, which was later renamed Austin.

Washington County was created by legislation of the Republic of Texas in 1836 and formed the following year. Washington-on -the- Brazos was determined to County Seat. Despite the transfer of the same to Brenham in 1844, the city remained an important center for trade in cotton, until the mid-1850s, the line was passed by the city for the construction of the railway. The American Civil War also took its toll and turn of the century 19-20. Century was the place practically deserted.

The State of Texas acquired in 1916 approximately 202,000 m² of space at the original location and built a replica of the building in which the delegates had met. Fitting site was acquired in 1976 and 1996. The site is located between Brenham and Navasota, Texas off of State Route 105 and on the grounds also include a museum and a library.

In Houston is named the leading westward Washington Avenue to Washington -on-the - Brazos.
