Wellington City Council

Wellington City is an urban district (English: City Council ) at the southern tip of the North Island of New Zealand. It serves both as administrative headquarters of the Greater Wellington region, as well as the capital of the entire country. Together with the cities of Porirua, Upper and Lower Hutt she forms the actual metropolitan Wellington.

Geography

The city of Wellington is located on the southern tip of the North Island of New Zealand. The metropolitan area forms a peninsula, surrounded on the west and south by the waters of Cook Strait. The eastern boundary is formed by the Port of Wellington (Wellington Harbour ), to the northeast, the urban area closes from Lower Hutt and in the north the city of Porirua on.

The peninsula is - especially on the Western side - very hilly. Because of this, the built-up area is concentrated on a small strip near the natural harbor. The geographical nature and the relatively large earthquake risk are the main reasons why Wellington, although it is the capital of the country, compared to other regions such as Auckland or Canterbury, only slowly growing.
