Porirua

Porirua is a city on New Zealand's North Island. She had about 50,000 inhabitants in 2004, and together with the 20 km to the south, Wellington City, Upper and Lower Hutt Wellington conurbation.

Geography

The Porirua City Council is located at the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island. To the north borders of the 182 km ² large district in the Kapiti Coast District, on the east by the city district ( City Council ) Upper Hutt, on the southeast by the Lower Hutt and in the south eventually to the New Zealand capital of Wellington City. The entire west coast is bordered by the Tasman Sea.

The city itself is located at the southern end of the Kapiti Coast Porirua Harbour right on, one consisting of two arms natural harbor, which is only a few hundred meters wide at the narrowest points.

Because of its proximity to Wellington Porirua heard - as well as Upper and Lower Hutt and Wellington himself - Wellington to the metropolitan region that includes together approximately 370,000 inhabitants. Often Porirua is also referred to as a satellite city of Wellington.

History

The name " Porirua " comes from the language of the Māori. " Pari- Rua " means as much as two tides, probably meaning the two arms of the Porirua Harbour are meant.
