Werner Eggerath

Werner Eggerath ( born March 16, 1900 in Elberfeld, † June 16, 1977 in Berlin) was a politician of the KPD / SED, resistance fighters against Nazism and German writers.

Life

Eggerath was 1918-1919 soldier, fought in 1920 in the Red Ruhr Army and then took refuge in the Dutch province of Limburg. He lived in 1923 in the German border town Gangelt and worked in the 1920s as a Communist Party functionary. In 1929, he was a city councilor in Neuss, 1932 subdistrict head in Wuppertal. From 1932 to 1934 he attended the International Lenin School in Moscow and worked illegally for the Revolutionary Trade Union Opposition ( RGO ) and the German KPD - country line. In 1935, he was arrested and sentenced in 1936 by the People's Court for conspiracy to commit high treason to 15 years in prison, which he served partly in the penitentiary Münster and at the detention center in Bochum.

Eggerath in 1945 District of Mansfeld Seekreises in Eisleben and first secretary of the Communist Party district headquarters Thuringia, 1946 Member of Parliament of the Thuringian state parliament and state chairman of the SED of Thuringia. From 1947 to 1952 he served as President of the Government (Prime Minister) of the state of Thuringia. He was also a member of the German People's Council 1948-1949 and until 1954 deputy of the People's Chamber.

From 1952 to 1954, Eggerath Secretary to the Prime Minister of the GDR, then to 1957, Ambassador to Romania, 1957-1960 First Secretary for Church Affairs. From 1961 he lived as a freelance writer in Berlin.
