West Side (Manhattan)

The West Side is a part of New York's Borough of Manhattan.

Location

The West Side is located on the side of Manhattan Island which abuts the Hudson River and New Jersey is opposite. The Fifth Avenue, Central Park and the southern Broadway separate the West Side of Manhattan's East Side.

Thus, the Central Park separates the middle of Manhattan in the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side. This is also reflected in the street names: the " east streets" located east of Fifth Avenue and the " west streets" are west of Fifth Avenue.

South of Central Park, therefore, also shares the Fifth Avenue Manhattan on the East and West. To the south it meets the Washington Square Park. Here then takes over the Broadway the division between East and West, until ultimately the division into East and West in the maze of streets of the southern tip of Lower Manhattan dissolves more and more.

The Lower East Side is located on the eastern southern tip of Manhattan, was one of the original and once the north bordering the East Village. However, there is no counterpart in the sense of " Lower West Side" in the West. The counterpart to the East Village, the West Village here.

Quarter

The most important district of the West Side are ( from north to south ): West Harlem, Morningside Heights, Manhattan Valley, Upper West Side, Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea, West Village, SoHo, TriBeCa and.

Traffic

The entire Westside traffic- developed by the 8th Avenue and West Side subway lines. The main north -south connection are the Henry Hudson Parkway to the north and the West Side Highway in the south. Both highways are separated by the Hudson River Greenway from the west coast of the island.

Urban Development

Had New York City awarded the contract to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, the West Side Stadium on the Hudson River on the local sidings had been built as the Olympic Stadium at the level of Penn Station likely. This stadium was later home of the New York Jets are. After London asserted itself for the 2012 Summer Olympics, this 2- billion - dollar project disappeared into the drawer.

Subsequently, the plan for the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project was created with a mix of residential and office buildings, in order to ultimately enhance the Westside in this area.
