Western Bay of Plenty District

The Western Bay of Plenty is a New Zealand district and is located on the North Island in the Bay of Plenty in the same region. Administrative headquarters of the district is the town of Tauranga, but since 2004 forms a separate urban district and is thus located outside the actual district area.

Geography

The district covers the entire western part of the Bay of Plenty region on the border of the Waikato region, south east of the Coromandel Peninsula. In a direct north-west of the Hauraki District follows, further south follow the Matamata - Piako Districts and South Waikato, while following in the south of the Rotorua district and adjoins the east of the Whakatane District. The eastern part of the northern coast bordering the Pacific Ocean, the western part of the " Tauranga Harbour ", which is separated by the Matakana Island from the open sea.

The eastern part of the district is through the Kaimai Ranges - a central mountain chain - influenced, go through the various rivers in the northeast, where the land is flat and suitable for various types of agriculture.

Population

Since Tauranga, which now has well over 100,000 inhabitants, no longer belongs to the district, there is no clear alternative center of the area. The main settlements are Waihi Beach 2430 (2001) inhabitants, Katikati with 2916 (2001), Kaimai with 4719 (2001) and Te Puke and Maketu with 5771 (2001) and 999 (2001) inhabitants.

Economy

The outstanding economic activities in rural New Zealand also form in the Western Bay of Plenty on the one hand, agriculture and other tourism. Especially popular with visitors are the villages next to the beach such as Waihi Beach. Agriculture is dominated by fruit growing because of the warm, but still moist climate and fertile soils. Particularly important here are the lemon and the orange cultivation and the cultivation of New Zealand's " national fruit " of kiwi. So the village Te Puke calls itself " Kiwifruit capital of the world" ( kiwi fruit capital of the world ).
