Western Province, Rwanda

The Western Province ( kinyarwanda Intara y'Iburengerazuba, French Province de l ' Ouest, Eng. Western Province ) is a province of Rwanda. It was made with the introduction of a new management structure on 1 January 2006 from the former provinces of Gisenyi, Kibuye, Cyangugu and a small part of Ruhengeri. Its capital is Kibuye.

Geography

More cities will be Gisenyi and Cyangugu. In the west, the province borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Lake Kivu, on the south by Burundi. Tourist attractions are about the Nyungwe National Park, the shores of Lake Kivu, the hot springs of Bukunzi and the Virunga volcanoes. Between the hills and mountains run through numerous rivers the area. They shape with the touristic attractive landscape, but also cause soil erosion. Afforestation programs of the provincial government to counteract this.

Administrative Divisions

The province is divided into seven districts ( akarere ) Karongi, Ngororero, Nyabihu, Nyamasheke, Rubavu, Rusizi and Rutsiro.

Economy

Agriculture and animal husbandry are the main industries in the western province where the soil is fertile. There are a variety of basic food and cash crops as coffee, tea and pyrethrum grown and maintained various types of farm animals. In the future, the potential of fisheries and beekeeping to be increasingly used.

In industry, there are two tea factories, a cement factory and in Cyangugu a hydroelectric power plant. About Gisenyi cross-border trade in the Congo is operated.
