When the Angels Swing is an album by German pop band No Angels. It was released in November 2002 and reached number 9 in the German album charts. For this album, different songs from the albums were Elle'ments and Now ... Us! interpreted in the style Swing and rearranged.

Background

On 2 October 2002, the No Angels appeared at a concert in the Palace of Tears at the Berlin Friedrichstrasse before about 300 invited guests. The group was accompanied by a 24-member big band, including well-known jazz musicians such as Wolfgang Haffner, Axel Schlosser. and was Torsten Maass Arranged, the concert by jazz trumpeter and composer Till Bronner. The event in the small frame was recorded and published on 2 December 2002 as a live DVD, also titled When The Angels Swing. On 24 April 2004 the recording of the concert on ZDF, in the series ZDF in concert, broadcast on television.

Following the concert Till Bronner produced the album. The production followed the trend that was set in 2001 by Robbie Williams with the successful album Swing When You're Winning, and was continued by Paul Anka Rock Swings. In contrast to Williams, the jazz classics from the 1940s, interpreted, presented the No Angels their own title in swing arrangements for big band orchestration.

When the Angels Swing could not connect to the great success of the first two album releases. It was the first album No Angels, which was not positioned at the top of the sales charts. However, the Group was awarded on February 4, 2003 When the Angels Swing with the Media Award Golden Camera in category Pop National.

Music

Stylistically, the production can be seen as an example of how different music can be interpreted. Accompanied with the typical big band style, with clear accents on trumpet, saxophone and violin, from well-known titles is a new, clearly positioned swing sound. The hit Daylight in Your Eyes is unrecognizable in the new package right away, here come the Swing elements clearly in the foreground. In contrast, the titles are Like Ice in the Sunshine and There Must Be an Angel, in which the arrangement is not too far from the original. The interpretation of Something about Us can be better to assign to the music style Samba stylistically by the selected rhythm. This is also true for the title Now That We Found Love with typical percussion elements. With the song and the music from When the Angels Swing singers can reach their target audience from the conventional pop music as well as supporters of Swings.

Title list

Single

The single All Cried Out was released on 2 December 2002 in a Swing and a pop version. The title reached number 18 in the German single charts. The pop song All Cried Out Alison Moyet was originally released by and interpreted by the No Angels as a cover version. The title has not been presented at the concert in Berlin, the associated video but is included as a bonus on the DVD edition.

From Alison Moyet interpreted as a ballad, the pop version of No Angels is distinguished by the strong influence of electronic elements. The song seems faster overall. The Swing version presented stylistically typical big-band sound. In addition, an extended version is included on the single, which apart from the length is not significantly different from the pop version. As a bonus, the single contains the track Dance Funky Dance.

Reviews

  • Dorothee von Peterffy for laut.de: "If you want to venture compared to Robbie's swing album, No Angels fall far. This may be due to their being too attached to the present day pop songs just do not want to fit into the Swing Dress. A success as once the Williams likely to fail. "
  • Review on brainstorms42.de: " Robbie Williams has signed the most lucrative recording contract in history time not too long ago. Of these, the No Angels are still miles away, but even they dare to publish a swing album. [ ... ] 14 songs the album offers. And except for " Daylight ", which sounds at times forced, too much one gains the impression that something is made to fit that does not fit, it is a very great album, which will find its place under the Christmas tree. "
  • ProSieben's review: " Whether with trumpets, saxophones, violins, guitars, drum beats, or the piano - you actually known sound is a very new and the horizon opens. Even if you have no idea, or better, no interest in big band style: one should give the CD a chance - because here is jazz, blues and swing a new definition. "
