Whitsunday Region

Geography

The region is located about 960 km north of the capital, Brisbane and approximately 430 km south of Cairns in the middle of the east coast of the state.

Largest city and administrative headquarters of the LGA is Bowen with about 10 000 inhabitants. The region includes the following districts and towns: Airlie Beach, Andromache, Bogie Bowen Brandy Creek, Breadalbane, Cannon Valley, Cannonvale, Cape Conway, Cape Gloucester, Collinsville, Conway, Conway Beach, Coral Sea, Crystal Brook, Dingo Beach, Dittmer, Flametree, Foxdale, Glen Isla, Goorganga Creek, Goorganga Plains, Gregory River, Gumlu, Gunyarra, Guthalungra, Hamilton Plains Hideaway Bay, Jubilee Pocket Kelsey Creek, Lake Proserpine, Lethe Brook, Mandalay, Mount Coolon, Mount Julian, Mount Marlow, Mount Pluto Mount Rooper Mount Wyatt, Myrtlevale, Newlands, Palm Grove, Pauls Pocket, Preston, Proserpine, Riordanvale, Shute Harbour, Silver Creek, Spring Lands, Strathdickie, Sugarloaf, Thoopara, Turrawulla, Wilson Beach and Woodwark.

History

Is named the region after the Whitsunday Islands, the offshore island group takes its name " Whitsunday Islands " by the explorer James Cook. Center of the coastal region from the islands has long been Proserpine, which has about 3300 inhabitants. 1910, the Proserpine Shire was founded as a local administrative unit. Starting from the 60 's, tourism grew in the region and in the 80s overtook the population of the coastal villages of the inland cities and Proserpine. Several of these places joined 1987 Town of Whitsunday together and in 1989 also received the Shire that name.

Already in 1863 received the northerly coastal town of Proserpine Bowen community status, the surrounding, agricultural region was under the name of Wangaratta in 1879 its own local administration. 1960 Bowen Town and the Warangatta Shire had been united to the Bowen Shire. Today's Whitsunday region originated in the LGA 2008 reform of the two Shires Whitsunday and Bowen.

Management

The Whitsunday Regional Council has seven members. Six Councillor elected by the residents of the six divisions ( constituencies ). The Council President and Mayor ( Mayor ) is also elected by all residents of the region.
