Wiener Neustadt Island

The Wiener -Neustadt Island (Russian Остров Винер - Нёйштадт, Ostrow Winer Njoischtadt, also Остров Винер - Нойштадт, Ostrow Winer Noischtadt ) is an island in Franz Josef Land, Russian Federation.

The Wiener -Neustadt Island has an area of 237 km ² and is almost completely glaciated. The highest point on the island is 620 m, the peak Parnassus, the highest elevation in Franz Josef Land.

The island is part of the Zichy Land subgroup of the Franz Josef Archipelago. It is of the Ziegler Island and the Salisbury Island by the narrow Strait Collinson ( Proliw Kollinsona ) separately.

The island was named by the Austria -Hungarian North Pole expedition led by Julius Payer and Carl Weyprecht after lying south of Vienna Wiener Neustadt, whose Theresa Military Academy Payer had graduated.
