Wilhelm von Kobell

Wilhelm Alexander Wolfgang Hess Peter, since 1815 Ritter von Hess Peter ( born April 6, 1766 Mannheim, † July 15, 1853 in Munich) was a German painter and etcher.

Life

The son Ferdinand Kobell was initially trained by his father, and later by Franz Anton Leitenstorffer and Egid Verhelst at the Mannheim drawing academy, studied the works of Mannheim and Düsseldorf Gallery and followed in 1792 the appointment as court painter to Munich. 1809/10 remained KOBELL in Vienna and Paris in 1814-26 and worked as a professor of landscape painting at the Munich Academy. 1815 Hess Peter was awarded the Knight's Cross of Merit of the Bavarian Crown and levied under the Order Statutes as a knight of KOBELL in the personal nobility. Works (selection)

KOBELL painted animal and battle scenes, landscapes and portraits whose style initially under the influence of Dutch painting of the 17th century (especially the Philips Wouwerman ) stood and reached over the romanticized classicism to the age of Biedermeier.

1808-1815 he created for the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig a cycle of scenes from the Napoleonic wars, including " The Siege of Kosel " (1808 ). This series of twelve paintings commissioned Ludwig I modeled after the battle cycle by Franz Joachim Beich, the latter had painted for Maximilian II Emanuel.

There are also important his numerous etchings. The graphic work Kobell includes 134 sheets.

Reception

His major works were criticized in the 19th century as little alive, his etchings and aquatints by other masters were as lively.
