William Aquin Carew

William Aquin Carew ( born October 23, 1922 in St. John's, Canada, † May 8, 2012 ) was a diplomat of the Holy See.

Life

William Aquin Carew, son of William J. Carew CBE KCSS and Mary Florence Channing, attended from 1927 to 1940, the St. Bonaventure College and St. Paul seminar at the University of Ottawa. On 15 June 1947 he was ordained priest and became personal secretary to Ildebrando Antoniutti, the Apostolic Delegate to Canada and Newfoundland. From 1950 to 1952 he studied Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome. In 1952, he became the personal Sekretät by Patrick James Skinner CIM, Archbishop of Saint John's, Newfoundland. In 1953 he entered the service of the State Secretariat of the Vatican and was from 1963 to 1969 the head of the English-speaking section and was responsible for all state and diplomatic audiences of the Pope.

Carew accompanied the papal trip to Quebec City (1959) and the 25th anniversary of evangelization in Cebu, Philippines. He organized the travels of Pope Paul VI. to the Holy Land (1964) and Uganda (1969).

On November 27, 1969 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Archbishop of Telde and appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Burundi and Rwanda. The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for Religious, Ildebrando Cardinal Antoniutti, donated to him on January 4, 1970 at St. Peter's Episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Giovanni Benelli and Sergio Pignedoli. In April 1972, he was Special Papal Envoy in Bangladesh.

On 10 May 1974 he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Cyprus and Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine (Israel and Jordan). He was also Apostolic Visitor in Greece. He was from 1974 to 1983 at the University of Bethlehem and clergyman Chancellor Director of Theological studies in Tantur and Abraham House, a hospice in Jerusalem.

On August 30, 1983, he was appointed Apostolic Pro- Nuncio to Japan. His old conditional resignation, Pope John Paul II on 11 November 1997.

Honors

Pope Paul VI. gave him on 21 June 1963 honorary title Surplus secret chamberlain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) and on December 8, 1964 Title House Prelate of His Holiness.
