William Babington (physician)

William Babington ( born May 21, 1756 in Portglenone, at Coleraine, Ireland, † April 29, 1833 ) was a British physician and mineralogist. According to him, the mineral Babingtonit is named.

Life and work

Babington was from 1795 to 1811 physicians at Guy's Hospital. From 1822 to 1824 he was president of the Geological Society of London. Babington was curator of the mineral collection of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. After his death in 1792, he bought the collection.

His son was the physician Benjamin Guy Babington ( 1794-1866 ).
