William Joseph Behr

Michael William Joseph Behr ( born August 26, 1775 in Sulzheim; † August 1, 1851 in Bamberg ) was a German constitutional lawyer and politician.

Behr studied philosophy and law in Würzburg and Göttingen and was from 1799 to 1821 professor of constitutional law in Würzburg. Due to the Carlsbad Decrees him permission was withdrawn to lecture. From 1821 to 1832 he was the first mayor of Wurzburg and published " Conversations of a mayor with his fellow citizens " out. The boldness, notably occurred with the Behr as Bavarian Landtag for the principles of constitutionalism, the Bavarian government moved to open an investigation against him, which drew his dismissal from the mayor's office by himself. After several years of investigation into demagogic intrigues and lese majeste (for example, as a subscriber of Gaibacher festival), he was sentenced in 1836 to apologize in front of the portrait of the king and a fortress penalty of indefinite duration. Behr spent the subsequent years only on the fort, then under police supervision in Passau, Regensburg and Bamberg, until he was rehabilitated in 1847 and released on March 6, 1848.

From 18 March to 21 September 1848 he was attached Members and interim president of the Frankfurt National Assembly for the electoral district of Kronach.

From the city Volkach of William Joseph Behr Award is awarded for excellence in performance Rates History on Franken- school camp castle Gaibach.
