William Montgomery (congressman)

William Montgomery (* April 11, 1818 in Canton, Washington County, Pennsylvania, † April 28, 1870 in Washington, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1857 and 1861 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Montgomery enjoyed a good basic education. In 1839 he graduated from the Washington College. After a subsequent law degree in 1841 and its recent approval as a lawyer in Washington, he began to work in this profession. In 1845 he was there also District Attorney. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. In 1854 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress yet.

In the congressional elections of 1856, Montgomery was but then in the 20th Election District of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Jonathan Knight on March 4, 1857. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1861 two legislative sessions. These were shaped by the events in the immediate Vorefeld the Civil War. In 1860 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives William Montgomery practiced as a lawyer again. In 1866, he sought unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He died on April 28, 1870 in Washington ( Pennsylvania), where he was also buried.
