William Owens (admiral)

William Arthur Owens ( born May 8, 1940 in Bismarck, North Dakota ) is a retired American admiral of the U.S. Navy, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as economic managers.

Biography

After schooling, he studied mathematics at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and acquired there a Bachelor of Science (BS Mathematics ). He then joined the U.S. Navy and was one of these until 1996. A post-graduate studies in political science, philosophy and economics at Oxford University, he finished with a Bachelor of Arts (BA ) and a Master of Arts (MA Politics, Philosophy and Economics ). Another post-graduate degree in Management at the George Washington University he graduated with an MA more From management.

In 1990 he was commander as admiral of the U.S. 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean. Subsequently, he was from 1992 to 1994 Deputy Chief of Naval Operations ( Deputy Chief of Naval Operations ). On 1 March 1994, Admiral Owens Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff ( Joint Chiefs of Staff ), and retained the post until his retirement on 27 February 1996.

He then moved into the private sector, where he was working as a manager. As such, he was a board member of AEA Investors, Daimler- Chrysler and Polycom. Between 1999 and 2003 he was Vice- Chairman and Co -Chief Executive Officer ( CEO) of Teledesic Corporation and thereafter until 2004 as its CEO. Then he was between 2002 and 2005 Member of the Board and at the same time in 2004 and 2005 CEO of Nortel. In addition, he was temporarily President, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer ( COO) of Science Applications International Corporation ( SAIC).

Since 2006, William Owens Chairman of the communications company Embarq and board member of Wipro Limited. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and trustee ( Trustee ) of the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Along with Edward Offley he was the author of the book published in 2000, Lifting the Fog of War.
