Williamstown (South Australia)

Williamstown is a town in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, 51 kilometers east of Adelaide.

The city lies at the southern end of the Barossa Valley 310 meters above sea level. Today about 2,700 people live in Williamstown.

Williamstown is part of the Barossa Council.

History

Prior to the settlement of European Einwander lived a small number of Aboriginal people in the area. The first European explorers arrived in 1838 under the leadership of Colonel William Light through the Barossa Valley. The first settlers in Williamstown was Thomas Adams, who named the place Victoria Creek. The land was considered so worthless that Adams eintauschte against a herd of horses. The new owner, a man named John Stone, divided the land into parcels. He called the little town by his eldest son William and Elizabeth Street after his wife.
