Wim Overgaauw

Wim Overgaauw ( born November 23, 1929 in Hilversum, † November 30, 1995 same place ) was a Dutch jazz guitarist. He is regarded as the most influential musicians of his instrument in the Netherlands.

Career

Overgaauw began as a violinist and also played two years in a string orchestra. Then he switched to guitar and performed in American military clubs with Nick Vollebregt. He is best known for his membership in the trio of Pim Jacobs with singer Rita Reys in the 1960s; he played in the 1950s, with Wessel Ilcken and later led his own groups. But he also took, for example, with Lee Konitz on and accompanied Cannonball Adderley, Sam Jones and Jimmy Raney. For many years he was a lecturer at the Conservatory in Hilversum, where, inter alia, Jesse van ruller and Maarten van der Grinten were among his pupils. By nature modest, he avoided last public appearances. In an interview in 1994 he stated to be partially influenced more by his students and younger players like David Gilmore from the band by Steve Coleman. He also composed music for film and television, gave guitar workshops and wrote a guitar textbook, "The European Jazz Guitar".
