Wojciech Stattler

Wojciech Korneli Stattler ( born April 20, 1800 Krakow, † November 6, 1875 in Warsaw) was a Polish painter and art teacher.

Life

Wojciech Stattler was born the son of the boiler manufacturers, and the City Council of Krakow Joachim Stattler. In 1816 he began to study mathematics and science at the Jagiellonian University, but after a year he moved to the School of Art Krakow to study with Antoni Brodowski, Józef Franciszek Peszka and Lampi. Subsequently, from 1818 to 1827, he studied in Rome and Venice, among others by Vincenzo Camuccini, Bertel Thorvaldsen and Antonio Canova.

After his return he worked as a portraitist and portrayed among others Members of the Potocki family and Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski. 1829-1857 he was a professor of Cracow School of Art. His students there were, inter alia, Aleksander Kotsis, Arthur Grottger and Jan Matejko. In 1870 he moved to Warsaw, where he died in 1875 and was buried at the cemetery Powązki.
