He formed together with Jürgen Zäck and Dirk Aschmoneit the dominant "Big Three " about the Ironman in Germany in the early 90s. In 1993 he was the first German on the podium at Ironman Hawaii - the third place.

There was a serious infection of the knee joint, which almost led to a sudden end career.

By this infection, the Rehabilitiation dragged on so Dittrich in 1996 could start in an Ironman competition for the first time. With a lead of over ten minutes, he had to quit, however, because of a front wheel defect in his first race at Ironman Japan. From 1996 he started again at Ironman Hawaii, always came up with the lead group out of the water, but could not go on his top times mainly driven workflows. In 1998 he finished his last race in Hawaii due to stomach problems early on the bike course.

The Steel Town Man in the Austrian city of Linz was previously his first and only victory in a long distance in 1998.
