World Mountain Running Championships

The Mountain Running World Championships ( World Mountain Running Championships, and 2008 World Mountain Running Trophy ) are international competitions in mountain running, which is being organized since 1985 by the World Mountain Running Association ( WMRA ). In even-numbered years uphill sections are completed, in odd uphill downhill courses. 2009, the official competitions of the International Association of Athletics Federations ( IAAF) have been upgraded to world championships.

The championships consists of four races: two in the adult category for both men and women and two in the junior category for male and female adolescents ( 16-19 years old ). In all categories, there are also a team score for the participating nations.

In 2001, the World Masters Mountain Running Championships were introduced. These are the official Mountain Running World Championships for seniors indoor and seniors, the age classes from W35/M35 to W75/M75. According to the regulations of the WMRA the maximum age of participants is limited to 79 years.

Since 2004 there is also a World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge.

History

Although the event claims to be the world championships, occurred in the first Mountain Running World Championships in 1985 exclusively European runner. That changed in the next year, when four runners from Morocco and one from Algeria took part. From 1985 to 1992, there was also a short-range competition for men, at the 1988 Austrian musician, cabaret artist and painter Alf POIER participated.

The countries of the Eastern bloc stayed away from the Mountain Running World Championships, with the exception of Hungary, which is already on September 16, 1989 sent a runner to the World Championships. After the collapse of the Eastern Bloc came at the World Championships on September 15, 1990 for the first time on athletes from the Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Bulgaria.

The junior competition took until 1992 for the first time. After that there was a four-year interruption until he was held for the second time in 1997 and since then is an integral part of the World Championships.

By 2008, the runner from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland competed separately. Since 2009, together they form the team of the United Kingdom.
