Kamnik

Kamnik ( German stone in the Upper Carniola) is a town with 28 859 inhabitants ( 30 June 2009) south of the Steiner Alps in Slovenia. The city center is about 24 km north of the city center of the capital Ljubljana ( Laibach ).

Municipality

The municipality is located in north Mittelsloweniens and includes with its 265.6 km ² a large part of the Kamnik Alps.

History

Stone in Upper Carniola was mentioned as a place for the first time in 1061 as a possession of the Counts of Andechs. As the market it is called since 1188, as a city since 1267th In the Middle Ages it was one of the most important trading centers in the Duchy of Carniola, and was located on the main road between Ljubljana and Celje. With the shift in trading patterns in the 16th century, it lost its importance.

After the construction of the railway Ljubljana - stone in 1890 it came to the establishment of several industrial companies, including Stol (furniture industry), Utok ( leather), titanium ( door locks ), ETA (food) and Svilanit (textile). Some of these companies, including Utok and Stol are, ceased to exist after 1990.

In recent times Kamnik is gaining importance as place of residence for people who work in Ljubljana, which is reflected in a construction boom but also increasing traffic problems (congestion ).

Attractions

Kamnik is one of Slovenia's oldest cities and has a preserved medieval town center. Attractions include the other castle Mali grad ( Small Fixed ), the location above the town castle ruins Stari grad ( Oberstein ), the library of the Franciscan monastery with about 10,000 books. In the castle Zaprice ( Steinbüchel ) is a local history museum. In the city the two rivers Nevljica and Kamniška Bistrica flow together ( Feistritzwerke ).

South of the city is as important excursion a park with arboretum on the grounds of the old castle Volčji Potok (Wolf Büchel ), which was blown up after the 2nd World War.
