Yantai

Yantai (Chinese烟台 市/烟台 市, pinyin Yantai shì ) is a prefecture-level city in east China's Shandong Province. It is the largest fishing port of Shandong and an important economic center. Yantai has an area of ​​13,745.74 km ² and approximately 6.46 million inhabitants ( 2002).

Geography

Yantai is situated on the Shandong peninsula south of the Bohai Sea and near the southern tip of Korea. The coastline is 909 kilometers.

Name

History

The region was inhabited during the Middle Ages by the people of Laiyi. It is believed that they formed a small state to the present city of Laizhou during the Xia dynasty.

Traffic

Yantai is the terminus of a railway and a highway from Qingdao. Regular shipping is to Dalian, Qinhuangdao and Tianjin.
