Region:

The Highway 3, better known under the name of Yellowknife Highway or Great Slave Highway, connects the capital of the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife, with the Mackenzie Highway (Highway 1). The highway ends 188 km north of the Alberta border. The road was built in 1960 and is fully paved since 2006.

The highway also connects Behchoko and Fort Providence with civilization. From Yellowknife the Ingraham Trail ( Highway 4 ) leads to around 70 km to the north in order to connect the unused during the winter ice roads to the road system.

The Mackenzie River ( south of Fort Providence ) was crossed from 1960 to November 2012 through a ferry services ( May to January ) or a ice bridge (December to March). The road had to be closed for approximately five weeks each spring due to the fracturing ice.

On 30 November 2012, the over the river leading Deh Cho Bridge was inaugurated to replace the ferry and the ice bridge. Trucks, which are north road must pay a fee for the use of the bridge. It is possible to register his truck before, for which the fee is charged. Private vehicles are allowed to pass the bridge for free.
