Yitzhak-Meir Levin

Yitzchak Meir Levin (Hebrew יצחק - מאיר לוין; born January 30, 1893 in Góra Kalwaria, † August 7, 1971 in Jerusalem) was a politician, minister and rabbi.

Biography

Yitzchak Meir Levin was born on January 30, 1893 in Góra Kalwaria, a stronghold of the Jahadut Charedit, born as the son of Zvi Enoch Heinich HaKohen Levin and Levin Feigele age. His training as a rabbi was carried out on a Talmudic school. He married Dvora - Matel Lewin (Hebrew מאטיל לוין אלתר ) ( born February 1, 1891, died July 22, 1981 ), daughter of Avraham Mordechai age the third Gerrer Rebbe. Together they had nine children. In 1940, the family of Yitzhak Meir Levin - left Poland in the course of Alija in the League of Nations Mandate of Palestine.

After his death on August 7, 1971 in Jerusalem, he was buried in the Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives.

Political career

At the founding of the Agudath Israel in Poland was Yitzhak - Meir Levin, among others part by the influence of his father. Due to the brisk business the organization of the elections to the city council of Warsaw could set up its own list in 1924. Yitzchak Meir Levin moved into the city parliament following the elections. In 1917 he was involved in the reasoning of the Bais Yaakov School System. In these schools, girls and young women from religious families were able to acquire their education, as it was only boys to cheder possible before. In 1929 he was elected to the Presidium of the Agudath Israel World Organization. Eight years later, he became one of the two co -chairs of the Agudath Israel World Organization. After the parliamentary elections in Poland in 1938 Yitzchak Meir Levin was able to move in the Sejm. As part of the resolution of the Second Polish Republic after the outbreak of World War II, he lost his seat in the Sejm. In the following years he assisted refugees in Warsaw.

He was named after his arrival in the League of Nations Mandate of Palestine the mastermind of Agudat Jisra'el.

In the constitution of the Provisional Government of Israel on 12 April 1948 he was Minister of Welfare. On 14 May 1948 he was one of 37 signatories of the Declaration of Independence of Israel. When the Declaration of Independence following parliamentary elections on 25 January 1949 he was elected to the first Knesset as a representative of the United Religious Front. In the coalition government headed by David Ben- Gurion, he was welfare minister. After the dissolution of the government on 15 October 1950 and the failure of the new government without the United Religious Front took place on November 1, 1950 to form a new government with the same coalition partners. Again took Yitzchak Meir Levin, the Ministry of Welfare. This government lasted until 14 February 1951. The following general elections on 30 July 1951, Yitzhak - Meir Levin re-elected to the Second Knesset and in forming a government again Welfare Minister. In this government, Yitzhak - Meir Levin remained until the breaking of the coalition government on 19 December 1952. Until his death in 1971, he was involved in any other government, but was elected to the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Knesset.

He founded in 1949 the daily newspaper HaModia (Hebrew הַמּוֹדִיע ), which acts as a mouthpiece for the Agudat Jisra'el.
