Zachary Breaux ( born June 26, 1960 in Port Arthur, Texas, † February 20, 1997 in Miami Beach ) was an American jazz guitarist.

Life and work

Zachary Breaux began at the age of nine, playing the guitar. After completion of the Lincoln High School, he studied composition at North Texas State University. In 1984 he went to New York, where he played six years in the band of vibraphonist Roy Ayers. Stylistically, his playing of George Benson and Wes Montgomery was inspired. During his career, he also played with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, Lonnie Liston Smith, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Donald Byrd. In 1996 he signed a recording contract with Zebra Records. He died in February 1997 at the age of 36 while on vacation in the ocean off Miami Beach, when he tried to save the life of a swimmer when it was swept away by the current.

Breaux was honored posthumously for his contributions to music from Texas Parliament.
