Jack McDuff

"Brother" Jack McDuff (Eugene McDuffy, born 17 September 1926 in Champaign, Illinois; † 23 January 2001) was an American jazz organist and band leader.

Life and work

McDuff began his career as a bass player Denny Zeitlin and Joe Farrell under. He then studied privately in Cincinnati and worked with Johnny Griffin in Chicago. Mid-1950s, he taught himself the organ and piano and played soul jazz recordings with Willis Jackson a.

His first album as a bandleader in 1960, he brought with Jimmy Forrest out. The following year he founded his own band with Harold Vick and Joe Dukes, and followed up with George Benson. With this band he recorded several albums, in addition, he worked with Joe Henderson, Pat Martino, Jimmy Witherspoon, David Newman, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons, and also experimented with electronic keyboards. Due to health problems he focused from the late 1980s to the studio work.
