Zambezi is a town on the Zambezi River on the highway M8 in the far west of North Western Province, Zambia 60 km downstream of Chavuma. It is located 1,050 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administrative district of the same name with 64 963 inhabitants ( 2000 census ). In Zambezi a car ferry connects the banks. In Chinyingi a 300 -meter pedestrian suspension bridge spans the stream.

Policy

In this district two ethnic groups, the Lunda and the Luvale live. The Luvale are the much larger ethnic group whose settlement area, far enough to Angola. The civil war in Angola and therefore probably led to repeated attacks by UNITA in this area and in 1998 over one hundred dead in Zambezi. UNITA suspected illegal diamond hunters here from the fields of Lunda Norte, from which UNITA drew several hundred million U.S. dollars in profits annually. This problem has shifted to Chavuma since 2004.

Economy

The district is dominated by agriculture, animal husbandry dominates. Grain is grown in subsistence. 43 km north of the Zambezi are three million tons of limestone and one million tons of marble good quality.

On 23 October 2006 the BBC reported in Zambia oil and gas deposits were first discovered. For detailed studies of the areas in the districts Chavuma and Zambezi President Mwanawasa would win foreign oil companies. Meanwhile, this information has hardened.

Infrastructure
