Zoe Rahman

Zoe Rahman ( born January 20, 1971 in Chichester ) is a British jazz musician ( piano, composition ).

Life and work

Rahman, who is of Bengali origin, grew up in Chichester and employed only later with the culture of their parents. She studied classical piano at the Royal Academy of Music and studied musicology at the University of Oxford, before going for a jazz training the Berklee College of Music where she studied with Joanne Brackeen.

In North America, she founded a first trio with bassist Joshua Davis and drummer Bob Moses. In later years, she also worked with her brother, clarinetist Idris Rahman. In addition to her own band projects, she is also with Courtney Pine, Steve Williamson, who JazzXchange Dance Company, Keziah Jones or Mekaal Hasan occurred. She wrote a theater show about Boris Vian, which she performed not only in Britain but also in South America between 2003 and 2005. She has performed at numerous international festivals, such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Molde Jazz Festival and the Barbados Jazz Festival.

She has also worked with other musicians such as Reem Kelani ( Sprinting Gazelle ), Clark Tracey ( The Calling, The Mighty Sas ); Gary Boyle (Games), the Soothsayers ( Tangled Roots ) or Terry Hall / Mushtaq ( The Hour of Two Lights ) was added.

Prizes and awards

Rahman was awarded the Perrier Young Jazz Musician of the Year ' Award in 1999. 2001, her debut album The Cynic was listed in the Jazz Album of the Year Review of BBC Radio 3; she herself was nominated for the " Rising Star " category of the BBC Jazz Awards. Their second album Melting Pot was named Album of the Year 2006 in the British Parliamentary Jazz Awards and also nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.
