Zvi Laron

Zvi Laron ( born February 6, 1927 in Chernivtsi, at that time Romania, now Ukraine) is an Israeli Kinderendokrinologe and emeritus professor of Romanian origin.

Career and work

Zvi Laron began his medical training at the University of Timisoara. In 1948 he emigrated to Israel. At the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he graduated in 1952. From 1956 to 1957 worked Laron in Boston at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School as a Research and Clinical Fellow in Pediatrics. Then he went back to Israel, where he was Director of the Institute of Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology of the Sackler Faculty of Tel Aviv University from 1958 until his retirement in 1992.

Laron is considered the founder of the Children Endocrinology in Israel. In 1966 he described together with Athalia Pertzelan and S. Mannheimer was the first new form of pituitary dwarfism. In this genetic disease, a growth hormone deficiency is caused by a resistance somatotropin. The disease is named after its discoverer as Laron syndrome.

Honors

Laron has received numerous international awards. He is, for example, since 1987 a member of the Leopoldina. In 1998 he received the Neiman - Natan Medal from the University of Nancy and 1999 the Andrea Prader Award. In 2008 he became a Knight of the Order of the White Rose ( Finland) and in 2009 he was awarded the Israel Prize. He was an honorary doctorate awarded by several universities, such as the University of Iuliu Haţieganu (1998 ), the University Victor Babeş (2000) and the Università del Piemonte Orientale ( 2000).
