The 1973/74 season was the 38th regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, the twelve teams played each 76 games. The eight best teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

For the play-offs, the eight best teams in the American Hockey League qualified. In the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played, which first played the second against the third and then the winner of this duel in round two against the winners of the regular season. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. The first two play-off rounds and the finals were played in best- of-seven mode.
