1978–79 AHL season
The 1978/79 season was the 43rd regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, nine teams played each 80 encounters. The top six teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Hampton Gulls that prematurely ended the season in the preseason, the game operation is not resumed
- The New Brunswick Hawks were added as an expansion team in the league

Calder Cup Playoffs
Mode
For the play-offs, the three best teams in the North Division and the South Division qualified. In the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played, which first played the second against the third and then the winner of this duel in round two against the winners of the regular season. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. The first play-off round was played in best- of-five mode, the second play-off round and the finals were played in best- of-seven mode.
