1980–81 AHL season
The 1980/81 season was the 45th regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, nine teams played each 80 encounters. The eight best teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Syracuse Firebirds stopped the game operation
- The Binghamton Dusters were sold and played from then on under the name of Binghamton Whalers

Calder Cup Playoffs

For the play-offs, the eight best teams in the AHL qualified. In the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. The first two play-off rounds and the finals were played in best- of-seven mode.
