1978–79 European Cup (handball)

At the European Cup of Champions 1978/79 took 26 handball club teams from 26 countries. These qualified in the previous season in their home countries for the European Cup. In the 19th edition of the competition, the winner for the first time in two finals ( return match ) was determined. The TV Großwallstadt was able to win the title at his first participation. Defending SC Magdeburg was reported by the German Handball Association of the GDR only for the European Cup Winners' Cup.

With a bye TV Großwallstadt, Honvéd Budapest, BC Calpisa Alicante, Fredericia KFUM, Slask Wroclaw attracted and SC Empor Rostock directly into a second round.

The first leg took place on 22 April 1979 in the Olympiahalle Munich and the return leg on April 29, 1979 in Rostock Sports and Congress Hall instead.
