1996–97 Serie A (ice hockey) season

The 1996/97 season was the 63rd season of the series A1, the highest Italian Hockey League. Champion for the 14th time overall in club history, the HC Bolzano.

Mode

First 14 teams contested together a first season phase. In the second phase, this season teams were divided into two groups of seven participants. The distribution between both groups in the second season phase was carried out according to their placement in the first season phase and the teams were scheduled to receive the bonus points. The top two teams of each group of the second season phase qualified for the final round for the HC Bolzano and the HC 24 were Milan directly qualified as a participant in the Alps league. The top four teams in the final round qualified for the playoffs, where the Master was played. For a win, each team received three points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
