Bagnols-sur-Cèze

Bagnols -sur -Cèze is a French town with 18,349 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Gard in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. The city is the capital of the eponymous canton of Bagnols -sur -Cèze and belongs to the district of Nîmes.

Geography

The city lies on the lower reaches of the river Céze. Bagnols -sur -Cèze located 15 kilometers north-west of Orange. The neighboring communities of Bagnols -sur -Cèze are Saint-Nazaire and Vénéjan in the north, and Chusclan Orsan in the east, Laudun- l'Ardoise the southeast, Tresques in the south, Sabran in the west and Saint- Gervais in the Northwest.

History

The place name derives from the Latin Balnearius. This means " place of the baths " and suggests that Bagnols -sur -Cèze was an important seaside resort in the Gallo-Roman era. As early as the 4th century was located at the site of the present church a sanctuary. In local Coat of three lilies of the Bourbons are included that indicate a long-standing rule of this house. 1208, the contract for the formation of a municipality has completed.
