Ben Cardin

Benjamin Louis Cardin ( born October 5, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party. He heard since January 3, 2007 the U.S. Senate as a representative of the State of Maryland.

Cardin studied at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He then worked as a lawyer. From 1966 to 1986 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Maryland, from 1979 as its chairman ( speaker ). Cardin was elected as a Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives and represented there, from 3 January 1987 to 3 January 2007 the third congressional district of the State of Maryland.

On 7 November 2006 he won the vacant by the retirement of Senator Paul Sarbanes of items. His opponent from the Republican Party was the Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, Michael Steele. In the Senate elections in 2012 he succeeded with 55:27 percent of the vote against Republican Daniel Bongino the initial re-election.

Cardin is married.
