Beriu

Beriu ( German Bärendorf, Hungarian Berény ) is a municipality in the district of Hunedoara in Transylvania, Romania.

The place Beriu is also known by the German name lamb village.

Geographical location

The municipality is located Beriu with their six villages and two hamlets in the southwest of the Transylvanian basin north of the Sureanu Mountains ( Muhlbacher mountains) in the historic Brooser chair. On Orăştie - a left tributary of the Mureş ( Maros ) - and the county road (Drum Judetean ) DJ 705A, about seven kilometers south of the European Route 68, the place is located approximately six kilometers south of the small town Orăştie ( Broos ); the district capital Deva ( Deva ) located 34 kilometers northwest of Beriu away.

The eingemeindeten villages are about 2-33 kilometers from the seat of the municipality and to achieve in part to field or forest roads.

History

The place Beriu was first mentioned in documents in 1332. Already in Roman times was - according to data from V. Roth and J. Brown on archaeological finds - the place inhabited. On the grounds of the eingemeindeten village Sibişel ( Altschebeschel ) were, according to reports by C. Gooss, G. Tocilescu, G. Téglás found, inter alia, Dacian coins La Tène. Some of the coins are in museums in Budapest and Vienna.

Because of the Turkish invasions of 1420-1430 decreased the population of Germans settled here; then attracted mostly Romanians in the villages.

The main occupation of the population is agriculture, cattle breeding and wood processing.

Population

1850 lived on the territory of the municipality 4,281 inhabitants. 3,745 of these were Romanians, Roma 235, 218 German, 78 Hungary, and five others. In that year, was the largest population - and at the same time the Romanians and the Romanian-German - determined. The highest number of Roma ( 333) was registered in 1956 and that of Hungary ( 259) 1880. In addition, identified themselves with almost every recording ever a resident of a Serb and some as Ukrainians, the largest number (12 ) was 1966. Were two 1880 and 1956 a resident registered as Slovak. As of the 2002 census, lived on the territory of the municipality 3,354 people, of whom 3,335 Romanians, Hungarians eight, seven Roma, Romania, three German and one Ukrainian.
