Chulman

Tschulman ( Yakut and Russian Чульман ) is an urban-type settlement with 9766 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Russian Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia), about 30 km from Nerjungri away. The settlement is located on the eponymous river Tschulman, a tributary of the Timpton in the catchment area of the Siberian Lena stream. Tschulman has an airport and is a station on the Amur - Yakut highway. Among the most important economic sectors include the extraction of coal, granite and gemstones. Near the town there is a thermal power plant. However, textiles and food is produced in the city.

History

The town was founded in 1926 with 19 residents. The end of 1940s and early 1950s was at Tschulman a labor camp of the Gulag. The persons working in buildings, among other housing estates and production in place and explored the coal deposits.
