Clérey-la-Côte

Clérey -la-Côte is a commune in the Vosges department in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Neufchâteau and Canton Coussey. The municipality has 34 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ), called Clercycurtiens.

Geography

Clérey -la-Côte is located in the north-west of the department of Vosges on the border between the départements of Meuse and Meurthe -et -Moselle. The village is 55 km away from Nancy and is located midway between Toul and Neufchâteau.

The municipality is situated on a south-facing slope above the Ruisseau de l' Orge, a small tributary of the Meuse River, which rises up to 427 meters. There are numerous sources, including the source of Saint -Mathieu. The fauna and flora is partly typical of the Mediterranean climate.

History

The settlement dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced tool finds. The village is under the name Clareium ad Rupem since Roman times and was near the road from Lyon to Trier.

Despite its small population of this once Clairey -la-Côte -called village had two castles, the remains of which are still visible in the Rue du Bois and the church. Two men still prevailed on the eve of the revolution, M. de Cholet de Saint -Martin and Baron de Saint- Amand.

A cholera epidemic claimed many victims, which are stacked in the forest in a walled hole still visible today.

Production of an estimated wine ( clairet ) was the main industry of the village, whose southern slopes of this are particularly suitable. 1889 produced one 500 hl of 25 hectares of vines. A road even bears the name of a winemaker ( Tysopin ). However, the wine-growing as a result of the crisis because of phylloxera ( Phylloxera ) and the cheap wine production from the south was abandoned in the early 20th century. The German Wehrmacht was on 19 and 20 June 1940 by the Meuse forth through the Strait of Sauvigny in the village.

Today there with Georges Fresnais still a distillery. The storm of 1999 caused severe wind damage in the forests. Mayor Jean -Louis Schmit let loggers come from Sweden and was awarded the Order of Merit farming. He died in May 2003.

Moncourt

Near the village was the old village Moncourt, which was completely destroyed during the Thirty Years War and today only the chapel from the 13th century exist on the. She was purchased by the inhabitants of Clérey -la -Cote as national asset. This place of worship was the residence of many hermits. The chapel, dedicated to St Gibrien was a center of pilgrimage for people who had lost a loved one or who are religious carelessness felt guilty.

The local source had allegedly curative effect against intestinal diseases. As a sign of healing was the case of a horizontal previously held the garment above the well.

Many Merovingian graves should exist here, but to date, no excavations have been conducted.
