Ed Rendell

Edward Gene "Ed" Rendell ( born January 5, 1944 in New York City ) is an American politician (Democratic Party) and a former Governor of the State of Pennsylvania.

Early years and political rise

Ed Rendell visited until 1965, the University of Pennsylvania. He then studied at Villanova Law School Law. There he got his degree in 1968. Between 1968 and 1974 he was a lieutenant in a reserve unit of the U.S. Army.

In 1977, Rendell was District Attorney in Philadelphia. A post he held until 1985. Between 1992 and 1999 he was mayor of Philadelphia. In this role, he managed to reduce a deficit of 250 million dollars. He could set up a balanced budget and generated at the end of even a surplus. He succeeded, although he lowered some taxes. During his tenure as mayor, the economy was in Philadelphia back on track and it created many new jobs. His merits as mayor found nationwide approval.

Governor of Pennsylvania

Ed Rendell was and is a leading figure within the Democratic Party. In 2000, he was Co - Chairman ( General Chairman ) of the Democratic National Committee. Still, he found it difficult to enforce within his party when he had erected in 2002 for the gubernatorial elections. Many party members favored the more conservative Bob Casey. Finally, Rendell was able to prevail and win the subsequent election for governor. On November 7, 2006, he was confirmed by the voters of Pennsylvania in his office; his term ended in January 2011.

During the presidential campaign of 2008, Rendell initially belonged to the supporters of Hillary Clinton. After their defeat in the Democratic primary in June 2008, he supported Barack Obama. Rendell was one of the so -called super delegates at the national convention of the Democrats. He is married to Marjorie Rendell since 1971; the couple has a son.
