February 29

During leap years, February is extended by a so-called leap day. This will give this year a February 29, the 60th day of the Gregorian calendar, then, is thus 306 days remain until the end of the year.

In the Roman calendar of Februarius was originally the last month and therefore the one to whom the intercalary days were added. But the real leap of the Gregorian calendar in Roman numbering is as in the Julian calendar, an inserted after February 23, the second February 24. This fact was evident until the reorganization of the Church's calendar of festivals 1969 because the Feast of St. Matthias, which was celebrated always on 24 February, was postponed in leap year on the 25th of February.

Today's regular leap days exist, since Pope Gregory XIII. in a papal bull on February 24, 1582 ordered all accrued 10 leap days. From then on, are all integers divisible by 4 years leap years, except for the centuries that are not divisible by 400, ie 1700, 1800, 1900. Contrast, 1600 and 2000, leap years.
