Field hockey at the 2012 Summer Olympics

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London 2012 two competitions were held in hockey from July 29 to August 11. At the tournament took at Madam twelve teams participate. Venue was the temporary Riverbank Arena in the Olympic Park, which offered 16,000 spectators.

Qualification criteria

At the competitions twelve teams of 16 athletes will participate in women and men, for a total of 384 athletes. Eight of the twelve quota places per gender were awarded in continental championships and tournaments. It qualified for the women 's two best and with men, the three best teams from Europe, in the women 's two best and with men, the best team from Asia and equally for women and men, the two best teams from Oceania and the best team from Africa and America. UK qualified automatically as hosts. Great Britain placed itself at the European Championships on a skill rank, the next following team receives the quota place.

Finally, three international qualifying tournaments were held, each with six teams in 2012 in women and men. The respective winners qualified for the Olympic tournament.

In the Asian Games secured for men and for women, Pakistan, China and South Korea their participation, could at the European Championships in each case the German and Dutch team, among men also Belgium qualify. From Oceania were expected each to Australia and New Zealand, eventually, the U.S. team secured a surprise in the men's and Argentina in the women at the Pan American Games their participation.

In the African qualifying tournament in Bulawayo qualified women and men, respectively, the South African team. The starting positions, however, were later returned because the tournament from the perspective of the South African Association did not constitute sufficient proof of performance for participation. Instead, the women's team competed in the qualifying tournament in Delhi, where she qualified as final. The men's team took part in the qualification tournament in Inuyama and could also qualify for good. The vacant quota places were awarded on the basis of the world rankings for women to Argentina and in the men from Spain.
