Giera

Giera ( German greed, Hungarian gyer, Serbian Cyrillic Djir - Ђир ) is a municipality in Timiş Banat in Romania.

Location

Giera is the " Banat hedge " approximately 48 km southwest of the district capital Timisoara ( Timisoara ), ( the " Altbezirk " Tschakowa ) on the national road DN 59B. 7 km northwest of Giera flows the Timis, which gives the district its name. In the East, about 11 km from the town Banlok, the former summer residence of the royal couple of Romania lies.

In the south, in about 3 km away Giera is separated from the smaller part of the Banat, which fell to Serbia by the Romanian- Serbian border. This also separates the city to the west located in about 10 km distance Modosch, which was ceded in exchange for the city Hatzfeld after the division of the Banat in 1919 to Yugoslavia.

History

The inhabited by Serbs village was settled in 1785 with the Germans. In 1795 the whole estate passed into the possession of Gyertyanffy family, after the town was named. The estate of Gyertyanffy family, called by the inhabitants Gieras fort was later LPG seat. To the municipality includes the villages Giera Grăniceri and Toager.

On 4 June 1920, the Banat was divided into three parts as a result of the Treaty of Trianon. The largest, eastern part, which also Giera belonged, fell to Romania.

As a result of the Waffen-SS Agreement of May 12, 1943 between the Antonescu government and Hitler's Germany, all German -born conscripts men were drafted into the German army. Even before the war, in January 1945, between 18-30 all German -born men and women were abducted at the age of 16-45 for construction labor in the Soviet Union. The land reform law of 23 March 1945 which provided for the expropriation of German farmers in Romania, the rural population deprived the livelihood.

On June 18, 1951, the deportation took place in the Bărăgan - steppe regardless of ethnicity. For this purpose, a plan to clean up the border area was designed by the Romanian government to Yugoslavia "by politically unzuverlässlichen elements." When the Bărăganverschleppten returned home in 1956, they got the 1945 expropriated houses and farms back of the field possession but was collectivized.
