Großschönau, Saxony

Grossschönau ( Upper Lusatian dialect: Greeting rail ) is a municipality in the district Görlitz, Saxony, near the German- Czech border. It is the administrative seat of the administrative community Grossschönau - Hainewalde. The name derives from the foundation of the town. The town was founded on a floodplain; therefore, did the name of " Big Beautiful Aue ".

Geography

The municipality is located in the Valley of Mandau, opens the Lausur here in the. House Mountain is 371.5 meters high Hutberg.

History

Grossschönau was probably founded by Frankish settlers as Waldhufendorf in the 12th century. The district consists of individual Neuschönau Häusler lines. The first mention of Grossschönau as " Magnum Sonow " dates from the year 1352. 1430 had Grossschönau a knight's seat and in 1564 a manor.

Grossschönau under stood from 1587 to more than 250 years the Zittau Council as landlord. 1666 posted this Friedrich and Christoph Lange brothers, two weavers of the town, to Holland to learn the art of damask weaving. A few decades later the linen damask from Grossschönau was known far beyond the country's borders. European mansions therefore their table linen preferably obtained from Grossschönau. 1834 sparked the Jaquardtechnik the elaborate damask weaving. As early as 1856 noted the Großschönauer manufacturer Carl Heinrich Schiffner at first Frottierwebstuhl in Germany. Since then Grossschönau developed into an industrial town with powerful Frottierwebereien how Lieske & Häbler, Richter & Goldberg and CG Hänsch. Today the company Frottana -Textil GmbH and Damino lead the long-standing textile industry in Grossschönau continued successfully. That's why this place has for some time now the marketing name " textile village Grossschönau ".

On August 7, 2010, there was also in Grossschönau to a flood disaster. Due to heavy rainfall (about 130 liters / m²) were filling the place flowing through the creeks and Mandau Lausur within a few hours and occurred in the afternoon on the shore. Many people had to be rescued from the floods and some have their homes and belongings lost.

On 1 January 2003 the municipality Grossschönau and the former municipality Walter village formed a unified community.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms shows two crossed shuttles on a crenellated wall, which is the coat of arms of Upper Lusatia borrowed and accessories symbolizes the Upper Lusatia. The mountain in the background symbolizes the Listen, which rises above the village of Walter village.

Structures

  • Along the Mandau you will find many of the regionally typical half-timbered houses. Here you will find the largest intact ensemble of half-timbered houses in Upper Lusatia. The entire townscape of the municipality is characterized by over 650 half-timbered houses.
  • Villa, now the seat of the municipal administration
  • In 1807 to 1809 of the Christian Damastfabrikanten David Waentig " copper house" built, a residential and commercial building, now home to the German damask and Frottiermuseum.
  • Also worth seeing is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Great Schönau. It was built in 1703-1705. With three galleries to accommodate 2,000 churchgoers. This makes it the second largest village church in Saxony. The lower gallery is adorned with ornate Grisaillenmalereien of Großschönauer pattern illustrator David Christian Berndt. The greatest treasure is that of Johann Eleazar Zeissig ( called Schenau ) 1787 painted altarpiece " Resurrection of Christ".

Traffic

Road

Grossschönau located southwest of the B 96 and B 178 as well as to the state roads 135, 136, 137 and 138 adjacent to Varnsdorf in the Czech Republic, there is a border crossing for cars and buses.
