IAAF Diamond League

The IAAF Diamond League (until 2013 also Samsung Diamond League ) is an annual series of athletics meetings, which has been held since 2010. Predecessor was the IAAF Golden League.

Competition format

The IAAF Diamond League encompasses 32 different disciplines. Each meeting will be held competitions in 16 disciplines. The selection may vary from year to year. An exception is the two-day Aviva London Grand Prix with 27 disciplines.

For each discipline, there are a total score, called the Diamond Race. The results are evaluated for each discipline of seven meetings. Per event to get the top three finishers in each event points: for a first place four points for a second place two points and third place one point. In the final staging of a discipline in a season the achievable points are doubled. At the end of the season wins each one athlete who has collected the most points, but he has the season finale, so have contested the last discharge of his discipline. With a tie, the first tiebreaker, the number of individual wins, then the individual results.

Prizes

At each meeting of the Diamond League in each individual competition prize money will be paid out to the top eight.

Main Sponsor

Since the first occurrence of the Diamond League series in 2010, the South Korean company Samsung was the main sponsor. Beginning of April 2013 it was announced that a contract extension for the 2013 season was a failure. However, the hosting of the competition was not compromised.
