Iki Province

Iki (壱 岐 国Iki no kuni ) was an old province of Japan, consisting of the island of Iki.

History

After the Toi invasion of private trade began between the Korean kingdom of Goryeo, Tsushima, Iki and Kyushu, but was stopped by the Mongol invasions of Japan of 1274 and 1281. The Mongols, however, were banned from any further aggression against Japan.

Koryosa ( a historian of the Goryeo Dynasty ) notes that in 1274 an army of the Mongols, which included Korean soldiers, killing many inhabitants on the island.

Iki was next to Tsushima and Matsuura an important basis of Wokou (Japanese pirates). In order to prevent them from further invasions, Goryeo involved and its successor, the Joseon Dynasty this on trade and negotiated with the Muromachi shogunate and its representatives on Kyushu.

The province was in 1872 merged with other provinces to the prefecture of Nagasaki.
