Izumo Province

Izumo (Japanese出 云 国, Izumo no kuni ) was an old province of Japan. Today, the area is the eastern part of Shimane prefecture in the Chugoku Region.

Etymology

The origin of the word or the reading " Izumo " is derived from the goddess Izanami. It is regarded as the creator of Japan and to be buried on the Mount Hiba on the border of the provinces of Izumo and Hoki at today Yasugi.

The written word in the meaning " coming out clouds" in turn is based on a poem of God Susanoos in the Kojiki, when he was looking for a place for a palace for himself and Kushinadahime.

History

Izumo was one of the most politically influential regions of historical Japan. The mighty clan of Izumo ( also outdated Idumo ) pursued an independent policy. In the 4th century the region came under the influence of the expanding Yamato Empire, where it took over the role of a priestly possessions. To date, the Izumo Shrine, next to the Ise Shrine, one of the most important holy places of Shinto: He dedicated several Kami, but especially Okuninushi ( Ō- kuni -no- mikoto - nushi ), the mythical ancestor of Susanoo and all clan of Izumo.

In the Sengoku period Izumo had lost much of its importance. From 1566 to before the battle of Sekigahara, it was dominated by the Mōri, after the battle it was Horio Yoshiharu Matsue fief with the main castle in Matsue today.
