Jelenec

Jelenec (up to 1948 Slovak " Gýmeš "; Hungarian Ghymes or Gimes ) is a municipality in western Slovakia, with 2037 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). Administratively it belongs to the Okres Nitra, which in turn belongs to the district Nitriansky kraj.

Geography

The municipality is located in Danube hilly country, a part of the Slovak Danube lowlands by the stream Jelenský creek, at the foot of the mountain Tribeč. The " mountain" is the DUN (514 m nm), about four kilometers north of the town, where there are the ruins of the castle Gýmeš. The mountain is also often used for recreational purposes. Jelenec is situated 14 kilometers from Nitra and 15 kilometers from Zlaté Moravce and is off the main road 65

History

The town was first mentioned in 1113 in the Zoborská documents as Gimes writing. In the 13th century the family Hunt - Poznan got the town by King Andrew II in 1253, the castle was created and the newly formed family Forgách given, the village remained more or less from the beginning of the 20th century in their possession. 1576 and 1663 the town was taken by the Turks affected, as well as of Bethlen aufständischem army in 1618.

The most probable theory of the origin of the name claim that the name of the Hungarian word " gim " ( = deer ) has its origin. The Slovak name was changed to Gýmeš Jelenec 1948.
